The memory layout can change from different kernel versions. You could have a most-often-used buffer sitting in marginal RAM with a new kernel. Another kernel might never even access this area because it might be in a page that is permanently allocated, used for a stack, and too low to ever be accessed. This is conjecture. There are thousands of reasons why that RAM was never any problem with another kernel. Check your fan, though.
