IRQ 255 suggests, that the BIOS did not configure any interrupt for this device. I have never seen a recent Compaq machine, but IRQ 255 is the same thing that used to be reported when you plugged a misconfigured NCR53c810 card into a PCI board. So, I suggest that you try to either adjust your BIOS settings or play with on-board jumpers (if any). It is quite possible that you do not notice any problems under other operating systems, because the drivers might not be using interrupts.
