Perhaps it is not Linux's fault.  I experienced problems under slowaris 2.4
with squid 1.1.5 and BIND 4.9.5-REL to the extend that I had to recompile
squid and specify in the makefile to link against libresolv.so.1 (BIND
4.9.4-REL).
