Seems I spoke too soon ... that patch did fix the routing and setting the IP addresses. Unfortunately the diald packet queue is keeping all packets, giving each a TTL of zero, but not expiring them, with the result that the connection comes up, but never goes down.
Forcing the connection down appears to clear the queue ready for another connection --- I'm spending what time I have over the holidays to hunt this down ... if it looks familiar to anyone, guidance is certainly most welcome
