I once (1.3.64) hacked fs subtree with ext2, minix, msdos and vfat to work (to some degree) in user mode by writing stubs for kmalloc, ll_rw_block and friends. It could "mount" filesystem, read directory entries and stat. I guess this way you could do some testing, make the fake device return errors at random times etc.
