Not if the application was dynamically linked (with the C library).The only
commercial Linux app I've seen (Wabi) is linked dynamically.

This trick can also be used to replace other libc functions (like malloc).
This is used in practice to get netscape 3.0 browsers working since they have
malloc/free bugs which used to work on older libc but not anymore with recent
ones.
