For some reason, the eepro100 driver isn't integrated into the kernel
(as of 2.0.31pre10). It's self documenting on how to compile, but it
doesn't show up on the regular kernel configuration system, and it's
even less convenient to use where you're not using kernel modules
(e.g. because your modules are for a different instance of this kernel
version, and you don't like the oopses).

I've not done a complete survey, but I wonder if there might not be
other such artifacts out there in the kernel source (.c files that don't
get compiled except by manually invoking cc, yet which are still part of
the kernel).
