(Just joined this thread so I may be off track.) I had DMA problems with ftape starting with kernel 2.0.0. The solution was to upgrade to ftape-2.10 (or newer?) and run the program called swapout that came with ftape before loading the ftape module manually or by kerneld. It appears dmaalloc() must have sufficient non-fragment memory in order to succeed. Swapout helps by defragmenting memory by allocating a five Meg chunk and then freeing it.
