Even if NetBEUI was NOT propriatary would you really want to use it? It is NETBIOS encapsulated in BROADCAST packets!!!! Every machine on the local network ends up receiving this stuff and dumping it on the floor if it's not for that machine. When one of our NetGarbage file- servers kicks off it's backup across the network, this machine slows to a crawl, the Suns are unusable (can't even log in, takes 30 minutes) and the screen-savers on the Windows machines halt in jerks.....
