I've got a machine with a 3c509 that booted fine with 2.0.20 (and
previous 2.0 versions) but won't boot with 2.0.21.

Sep 20 18:35:07 riker kernel: 3c509.c:1.07 6/15/95 becker@cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov

The card gets autodetected, but the first ifconfig command on the
3c509 gives a `try again' error message.

This is odd because two other of my machines using the 3c509 driver
booted fine into 2.0.21.

What else did you change besides the timeout? I tried reversing the
timeout patch, but it still failed at the first ifconfig.

This machine has been working fine with 2.0 for quite awhile (and has
a heavy mail load). System details available privately upon request.

Sigh.

What are the last two letters of "doesn't" and "can't"?
Coincidence? I think not.
