That is not a Linux KERNEL problem. It could be libc, psutils, finger,
fingerd, in.telnetd, login, getty, vtsplit, xterm, xterm-color, rxvt,
xdm, or messed up permissions somewhere around /var. Many of these
things have their own mailing list or newsgroup.
