Subjectftape kernel errors

i am assuming that because ftape is built into the kernel, that this
becomes an appropriate place to raise this question.

when i run tar -cpvf /dev/ftape -X tape.noarc /

it get the tape backed up to about 3/4's(estimate) and then it stops the
process with this statement:

tar: only wrote 9216 of 10240 bytes to /dev/ftape

can someone direct me to where i can find the answers?
