On Western Digital drives they are labels MA, SL and CP.
MA Master
SL Slave
(no jumpers means single drive)
CP Conner Peripherals. Apparently some/many/all (?) Conner drives are
broken and the IDE controller on the drive needs to know it's connected
to such a device.
