...but after reading the manuals (HP-UX) we decided not to use it at
all. It's too easy to get bad deadlocks. We prefer to explicitly
flock() a file.

BTW: HP-UX 10.01 says that "Only advisory record locking is
implemented for NFS files." (That is even the s-bit won't cause
implicit flock()s; you must do it explicitly). Maybe we can make both
parties happy.
