Subjectkernel problem

Hi There,

if there is anyone who can help me, that well be great!!

i've tryed to compile my new linux-kernel 1.3.20(with no result), my computer
have the
following features:

1- 486 DX2/66, BIOS(Phoenix 1995)
2- 8MB RAM
3- Spea garfik card
4- two harddisks:
a) western digital 1654cy, 16hd, 63sec and 813MB
partions: had1(msdos), hda2(msdos)
b) samsung 1086cy, 16hd, 63esc and 547MB
partions: hdb1(msdos), hdb2(ext2) with linux, hdb3(swap) swap partion

after the intalltion, i wanted to compile the kernel as it use to be:

make config
make clean
make zImage

that was impossible and the reason which i don't understand follows:

>>darkstar:/usr/src/linux-1.3.20# make zImage
gcc -D__KERNEL__ -I/usr/src/linux-1.3.20/include -Wall -Wstrict-prototypes -O2
-fomit-frame-pointer -pipe -m486 -c -o init/main.o init/main.c
/usr/src/linux-1.3.20/include/asm/string.h: In function `memchr':
In file included from /usr/src/linux-1.3.20/include/linux/string.h:38,
from init/main.c:20:/usr/src/linux-1.3.20/include/asm/string.h:445: virtual
memory exhausted
cpp: output pipe has been closed
make: *** [init/main.o] Error 1:<<

i've tryed to change the swap partion space : 100MB, 30MB, 20MB, 16MB but
there was no change
it was always the massage to see!!!

if there is anyone who konws whats going on here, she or he can mail me on the
email-
address below

thanks ;-)
