Sarcastic (but true) answer:
I claim that, for as long as I can remember, on any Un*x I've run, for any size terminal, for any kind of network connection, this has *always* been flaky.
Please put "eval `resize`" or somesuch in your .login (or whatever).

Frankly, I'm floored. How could Linux 1.3.72 not screw up what every other Unix I've worked with has?
Well, anyway, maybe it is a networking problem with Linux, even to localhost. Wouldn't surprise me. Try to figure out how the mechanism is supposed to work in rlogin... then figure out which packets are being dropped, or what.
