I have had the same problem a couple of times in the last couple of weeks.
I assumed it was the old getty I use not properly closing out an entry
in the /var/adm/wtmp, utmp, and lastlog files. Do a "last | more", and you
should see that those "users" are marked as "Still logged in". To fix the
display, I zeroed the above mentioned three files. Now "w" only shows
who's really on.
Also, my "who" doesn't work at all. It hasn't since the mid-60s (kernel
versions :). I also went from a.out to ELF at about the same time, and
changed a lot of libraries, so I assumed "who" was broken by that.

My next attempts to fix this will involve upgrading "who", and my
getty, both of which are old, and a.out. After that, I'll come back
here and ask again.

Unless someone has a better idea.
