I have had the same problem a couple of times in the last couple of weeks. I assumed it was the old getty I use not properly closing out an entry in the /var/adm/wtmp, utmp, and lastlog files. Do a "last | more", and you should see that those "users" are marked as "Still logged in". To fix the display, I zeroed the above mentioned three files. Now "w" only shows who's really on. Also, my "who" doesn't work at all. It hasn't since the mid-60s (kernel versions :). I also went from a.out to ELF at about the same time, and changed a lot of libraries, so I assumed "who" was broken by that.
My next attempts to fix this will involve upgrading "who", and my getty, both of which are old, and a.out. After that, I'll come back here and ask again.
Unless someone has a better idea.
