A couple of things I've noticed in 1.3.75 today:
1) Ftape
I thought I'd do a backup today while studying. Ftape seems to really misbehave with my Iomega Ditto 420 drive with approprite QIC-Wide tapes. Here are exempts from /var/adm/messages from kernel 1.3.66 (which works wonderfully) and 1.3.75 (were ftape is unusable) using the same tape!. I would also like to mention, that ftape 2.07 doesn't work on 1.3.66 either. Somebody screwed something up between those to releases, I guess. And since the NR_MEM_LISTS vanished in kernel 1.3.74, ftape 2.06 doesn't even compile with the newer kernels =(
(Ftape was compiled as module in all cases).
Here is ftape-2.06 in kernel 1.3.66:
ftape-2.06 28/01/96 (c) 1993-1995 Bas Laarhoven (bas@vimec.nl) (c) 1995-1996 Kai Harrekilde-Petersen (khp@pip.dknet.dk) QIC-117 driver for QIC-40/80/3010/3020 tape drives Compiled for kernel version 1.3.66 ftape-read.c (read_header_segment) - calculated tape length is 410 ft.
.... and from here it goes WITHOUT error messages.
Here is ftape 2.08 in kernel 1.3.75
ftape-2.08 960314 (c) 1993-1995 Bas Laarhoven (bas@vimec.nl) (c) 1995-1996 Kai Harrekilde-Petersen (khp@pip.dknet.dk) QIC-117 driver for QIC-40/80/3010/3020 tape drives Compiled for kernel version 1.3.75 fdc-io.c (fdc_config) - Using the standard fdc controller. fdc-io.c (fdc_probe) - Type 8272A/765A compatible FDC found. ftape-ctl.c (ftape_activate_drive) - drive wakeup method: Colorado. ftape-ctl.c (ftape_get_drive_status) - error status set. ftape-io.c (ftape_set_data_rate) - post QIC-117B drive @ 500 Kb/s. ftape-io.c (ftape_set_data_rate) - 750 ft. QIC-80 tape. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ This is incorrect, I am using 400ft. QIC-Wide tapes; so this misinformation probably causes the problems.
ecc.c (correct_block) - ECC failed (0 CRC errors, >1 CRC failures): . ecc.c (correct_block) - attempt to correct data at 255. ftape-read.c (correct_and_copy) - ecc failure on segment 0. ftape-read.c (read_segment) - ecc failed, retry. ftape-read.c (read_segment) - interrupted by non-blockable signal. ftape-read.c (read_header_segment) - header segment damaged, trying backup. ftape-read.c (read_segment) - interrupted by non-blockable signal. ftape-read.c (read_header_segment) - no readable header segment found.
2) PPP
With 1.3.75 the PPP protocol behaves quite odd. File transfers either take forever, or abort prematurely. I also have trouble connecting. Also, Netscape 2.0 gives those "Connection Reset by Peer" messages again. This might be buggy Netscape, but I didn't get those in .66. Again, here are exempts from /var/adm/messages:
Here is 1.3.75:
Jun 18 15:01:08 (none) chat[420]: send (PPP^M) Jun 18 15:01:09 (none) pppd[418]: Serial connection established. Jun 18 15:01:10 (none) pppd[418]: Using interface ppp0 Jun 18 15:01:10 (none) pppd[418]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/cua1 Jun 18 15:01:28 (none) pppd[418]: Modem hangup Jun 18 15:01:28 (none) pppd[418]: Connection terminated. Jun 18 15:01:28 (none) pppd[418]: Exit.
Notice that after the connect, PPP never actually establishes a connection, but rather dies.
Look at 1.3.66 for a change:
Jun 18 15:11:37 (none) chat[248]: send (PPP^M) Jun 18 15:11:37 (none) pppd[246]: Serial connection established. Jun 18 15:11:38 (none) pppd[246]: Using interface ppp0 Jun 18 15:11:38 (none) pppd[246]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/cua1 Jun 18 15:11:39 (none) pppd[246]: local IP address 205.240.87.95 Jun 18 15:11:39 (none) pppd[246]: remote IP address 204.214.4.7
Here in 1.3.66, everything works fine and ppp establishes a connection. I believe it's not my providers fault, I tried this several times, and it can be reproduced =(
What a big message I've produced -- I guess I'll go back to what I'm supposed to do - study ;)
Cheers,
Jochen
P.S. The new kernels are really cooooool. Go Linus! =)
