I am getting lots of problems with the file table getting full. This
happens on a machine with pretty recent libraries and all, running
Xfree 3.2 (xdm). Upgrading to 2.0.25 didn't help.

It seems that for all kills of xdm (which just starts netscape without
any window manager ;) the TCP connections are closed, but the file
descriptor stays reserved. Ie. The connections stay in the CLOSED state.
a Partial netstat -a output:

Active Internet connections (including servers)
Proto Recv-Q Send-Q Local Address Foreign Address State
tcp 0 2 localhost:1535 localhost:6325 CLOSE
tcp 0 2 localhost:1534 localhost:6325 CLOSE
tcp 0 2 localhost:1533 localhost:6325 CLOSE

tcp 0 2 localhost:1515 localhost:6325 CLOSE
tcp 0 2 localhost:1514 localhost:6325 CLOSE
tcp 0 2 localhost:1513 localhost:6325 CLOSE

This goes on and on and. Note that the connection to fm1.internation.co.uk
was made with about 10 xdm/netscape sessions ago.

From proc:
~#> cat /proc/sys/kernel/file-max
1024
~#> cat /proc/sys/kernel/file-nr
704
~#>

So, after a while the file table is full and the machine has to be rebooted.
