SubjectNEC CDR-251 ATAPI cdrom Oops with kernel 2.1.9

I have an NEC CDR-251 4-cd changer attached as master on my secondary ide
controller (the PIIX3 busmastering ide controller on an ASUS P55T2P4
Triton-2 motherboard). I am using a relatively stock RedHat 4.0
installation, with all the errata fixes applied. I am using kernel
version 2.1.9. I compiled ide-cd and iso9660 filesystem support as
modules, among others, and use kerneld. At boot time, I automatically
mount whatever cdrom happens to be in the drive. A few minutes after
boot, the following message appears in the syslog:

kernel: hdc: cleanup_module() called while still busy

After that point, any attempt to read from the cdrom results in an Oops,
one of which follows:
